Commerce career options with salary: what each route pays and costs

Commerce career options with salary in India: pay and cost by route (CA, CS, CMA, BCom, BBA, economics, banking), 2026 pass rates and the honest spread.

Commerce career options with salary run from about Rs 18,000 a month for a typical graduate in formal work to Rs 12 to 13 lakh a year for a placed, newly qualified CA, and the gap comes from the route you take, not from the commerce stream. The right early decisions, and a high-income skill portfolio built beside the degree, are what unlock the higher band and earlier financial freedom. This guide prices each route in rupees, years and risk.

The short version

  • A plain BA, BSc, BCom or BBA graduate in formal work earns a median of Rs 18,000 a month at entry and Rs 25,000 at three or more years (PLFS 2025). Only 9.6% of those formal workers earn Rs 50,000 a month or more by then.
  • Lead with routes that can scale: finance and data analytics, digital growth, and an accounts, tax and GST practice. CA, CS and CMA are credentials with a business layer but a long ladder. Bank and RBI routes pay on a published scale, so the top is known in advance.
  • Before you trust any commerce pay number, run it through The 3-Clock Check: the exam clock, the low-pay clock and the payoff clock.
  • Keep the degree, add one pay skill, and decide on a professional course only after you have priced all three clocks.

What a plain commerce degree pays: the number most pages skip

Most commerce salary pages lead with CA. Start instead with what the degree alone gives you, because that is where most students begin.

Typical graduate in formal work, entry
Rs 18,000 a month

That is the median for BA, BSc, BCom, BBA and similar degrees at under one year (PLFS 2025, 699 people), about Rs 2.16 lakh a year.

Same group at 3 or more years
Rs 25,000 a month

About Rs 3.0 lakh a year, which is 25,000 / 18,000 = 1.39 times the entry figure.

Share earning Rs 50,000 a month or more
3.0% at entry, 9.6% at 3+ years

Rs 50,000 a month is Rs 6 lakh a year. Fewer than 1 in 10 formal workers with these degrees cross it even after three years.

Who is in formal work at all
15.0% of degree holders aged 21 to 34

Of 45.42 million holders in this bucket, 15.0% are in formal work, 7.6% in informal salaried work and 10.8% self-employed. 11.9% are still studying and 11.5% are unemployed.

Source: Avanti Fellows analysis of MoSPI PLFS calendar year 2025, ages 21 to 34, graduates only, formal work only. PLFS records only technical and professional qualifications, so arts, science and commerce degrees sit in one bucket and commerce cannot be split out. The 15.0% formal-work share is a share of all holders, and many of the rest are studying, raising a family or not seeking paid work. Wages are nominal for one year and survey errors are understated, so read them as point estimates.

Why commerce pay pages disagree

  • The CA average counts only people who got placed. ICAI says newly qualified CAs placed in industry average about Rs 12 to 13 lakh. That is a real number for a real group, but it is the group that cleared three exam levels, finished training and sat the campus drive. It is not the pay of a commerce student.
  • Degree-level averages hide how senior the sample is. PayScale prints Rs 5.53 lakh for BCom (2,226 profiles) and Rs 5.60 lakh for BBA (597 profiles). Only 5.1% of the BCom sample and 9.2% of the BBA sample are at entry level. Many are years in. Do not read these as a first offer.
  • Job-title pay is not degree pay. A financial analyst or accountant figure tells you what that title pays across all employers. It does not say that every BCom graduate lands that title.

The 3-Clock Check: price a commerce route before you start it

A commerce route can look attractive on its final salary and still be a poor choice once you count the years it takes to get there. Run each route through The 3-Clock Check.

Clock 1
The exam clock

How many separate exam stages sit between you and the title, and what share clears each stage in a single sitting. Pass rates are per sitting, so repeat attempts add years.

A title you have not finished earning pays nothing yet.
Clock 2
The low-pay clock

The months you work on a stipend or entry pay that sits below what a plain graduate earns, plus fees and coaching. Count it in rupees, not in feelings.

Training years are an investment only if the payoff clock is real.
Clock 3
The payoff clock

When the higher pay arrives and who it reaches. A published average that counts only the placed is a payoff for the winners, not a promise to the entrants.

Ask what share of starters ever reach the number.

Commerce career options with salary, route by route, most scalable first

The order is not prestige order or exam-difficulty order. It leads with routes where pay can grow past a salary scale because you can sell the skill, then moves to credentials with a business layer, then to routes whose ladder is fixed. Every route carries one of three labels: Scalable, Scalable with a business layer, or Not so scalable.

Route and label Fresher Around year three to five Top band How far to trust it
Finance and data analytics roles (BCom or BBA plus Excel, SQL, a BI tool) Scalable Analysis and reporting sell as projects and consulting, and one skill serves many businesses. It is also a crowded door, so proof decides the pay. Financial analyst: Rs 3.88 lakh average total pay under one year (418 salaries). Data analyst: Rs 4.13 lakh (576 salaries). PayScale, July 2026. 1 to 4 years: Rs 5.56 lakh for financial analyst (579 salaries) and Rs 5.66 lakh for data analyst (1,588 salaries). No sampled year-five figure found. 90th percentile base pay about Rs 10 lakh for both (1,058 and 2,389 profiles). The 10th percentile is Rs 2.67 lakh and Rs 2.89 lakh. Sampled salary site, by job title
Digital marketing and growth roles Scalable Results are measurable and sell to many businesses, so freelance work and an agency are open. Digital marketing manager title: Rs 3.09 lakh average total pay under one year (77 salaries). PayScale, April 2026. 1 to 4 years: Rs 4.79 lakh (146 salaries). 90th percentile base pay about Rs 20 lakh (343 profiles), 10th percentile Rs 2.71 lakh. A 7.4 times spread on a small sample. Small sample, manager titles only
Entrepreneurship or a family business Scalable You set the price, own the customers and can add people. Pay is profit after costs, so it can be zero or far above any salary. No sampled figure exists and we will not print one. Treat early income as unknown. Not found with a sample. Not found with a sample. Famous founders are outliers. No reliable data
Independent practice built on accounts, tax and GST work Scalable with a business layer A salaried accountant follows a fixed ladder. A practice with repeat monthly clients is the business layer. Accountant title: Rs 2.29 lakh average total pay under one year (247 salaries). PayScale, June 2026. 1 to 4 years: Rs 2.91 lakh (605 salaries). 90th percentile base pay about Rs 6.23 lakh (1,195 profiles). No verified spread of own-practice income. Sampled salary site, by job title
Chartered Accountant (CA) Scalable with a business layer A long exam ladder, but a practice or advisory firm can grow past any scale. Competition shows up again at the Final stage and again in placement. ICAI states newly qualified CAs in industry average about Rs 12 to 13 lakh (Secretary's letter, 27 April 2026). The 64th campus drive had 8,911 vacancies for 5,834 CA participants. No sampled figure found. ICAI's placement page gives Rs 32.33 lakh as the highest domestic offer in December 2025 to January 2026. Its Secretary's letter says above Rs 36 lakh. The two ICAI sources differ. Institute's own statement, placed candidates only
Company Secretary (CS) Scalable with a business layer An exam ladder into compliance. Compliance consulting is the business layer. ICSI publishes no current average that we could find. Read the notice of the drive you plan to join. Not found with a sample. Not found with a sample. Say less, not more. No reliable data
Cost and Management Accountant (CMA) Scalable with a business layer An exam ladder into costing and finance leadership. Cost advisory for small manufacturers is the business layer. No current ICMAI average that we could verify. Some blogs paste the CA placement numbers onto CMA, so do not trust a CMA figure that matches the CA one. Not found with a sample. Not found with a sample. No reliable data
General BCom or BBA with no added skill Not so scalable A crowded entry and a fixed pay ladder. It becomes a different route the moment you add one skill from the rows above. Rs 18,000 a month at entry in formal work, about Rs 2.16 lakh a year (PLFS 2025, 699 people). Rs 25,000 a month at 3 or more years, about Rs 3.0 lakh a year. Only 9.6% earn Rs 50,000 a month or more at 3 or more years. Government survey, one bucket for BA, BSc, BCom, BBA
Bank exam routes (PO and similar) Not so scalable A rank-based selection into a published pay scale. The top of the scale is known in advance, and service rules can limit outside work. SBI PO notices are reported with a starting basic pay of Rs 48,480 inside a scale that ends at Rs 85,920, plus allowances. Seen on prep sites, so confirm on the official notice. Moves on the scale by seniority and promotion. The scale ceiling, not a median. Reported notice, confirm
RBI Grade B (the economics stream is DEPR) Not so scalable A few posts, three exam phases and a fixed scale. A good fit for a person who truly wants central-bank work, a poor main plan for anyone else. The 2026 notice had 60 posts: 40 general, 10 DEPR and 10 DSIM. Starting basic pay is reported as Rs 78,450, so confirm on the official notice. Moves by grade. Set by the grade structure. Reported notice, confirm

Pay figures here are indicative ranges and averages from public profiles, not exact or guaranteed amounts. Pay differs by city, employer, skill and year, and markets change. Check current job listings (for example on LinkedIn, Naukri or Indeed) and ask people working in the role before you decide. Figures checked on 14 October 2026.

Where the table says "not found", that is deliberate. A made-up number is worse than a blank.

CA, CS, CMA, BCom, BBA or economics: four ways in

Most students ask which qualification pays most. The better question is what you will hold at each stopping point.

Door 1
Professional first: Foundation after Class 10 or 12

For CA the first Foundation attempt comes after Class 12. You pass three levels, then train for two years. If you stop midway you hold exam passes, not a title. Keep Class 12 and a degree running beside it if the family cannot absorb that risk.

Door 2
Degree first, professional second

Graduates can enter CA Intermediate directly with at least 55% in a commerce degree or 60% in any other degree (ICAI FAQ). ICMAI also lets graduates enter at Intermediate. So BCom marks are a gate, not a formality.

Door 3
Degree plus a pay skill

BCom or BBA plus Excel, SQL, a BI tool, GST work or sales proof. You hold a degree if the skill takes longer than planned, and you start earning without waiting for three exam levels.

Door 4
Exam ladder into a published scale

Bank and RBI routes. Pay is known and steady, the number of posts is small, and years of preparation can leave you with little proof. Run a skill beside it that you can sell if an attempt fails.

BCom

Opens: CA direct entry (55% in a commerce degree), CMA Intermediate, CS, accounting and tax work, bank exams.

Pay shape: The degree alone sits in the Rs 18,000 to Rs 25,000 a month formal-work band above. Pay moves when you add GST and accounting tools, or analysis.

Watch out: Do not assume the degree name creates the job. Marks matter if you want CA direct entry.

BBA

Opens: Sales, marketing, operations and management trainee roles, and a base for an MBA later.

Pay shape: No separate sampled BBA figure for fresh graduates. The PayScale average of Rs 5.60 lakh is mostly experienced people.

Watch out: A business degree with no domain skill leaves a generalist gap. Pick sales, analytics or operations and show proof.

Economics (BA or BSc)

Opens: Research, policy, data roles, RBI Grade B DEPR, and a master's in economics.

Pay shape: We found no reliable entry-pay survey for economics graduates, so we print none. The 2026 RBI notice offered only 10 DEPR posts.

Watch out: Statistics and Python or R decide pay more than the degree name. Do not plan around ten posts.

CA, CS or CMA

Opens: Audit, tax, compliance, costing, finance leadership, and an independent practice.

Pay shape: Pay is high for those who finish and get placed, with a long low-pay stretch before it. See the clocks below.

Watch out: A credential is the product only where the law reserves the work, as with statutory audit sign-off. Elsewhere it is a signal that skill and proof must back up.

Entry rules from the ICAI FAQ on the new scheme (2024 edition) and the ICMAI eligibility page. Rules change, so confirm on the institute's site before you register.

The exam clock: 2026 pass rates, stage by stage

A pass rate is a single sitting, not a final success rate. Still, it shows how often a stage says no.

Stage Pass rate Counts Source
CS Executive, June 2026 17.41% and 22.19% Module 1 and Module 2 pass rates. Counts not published in the report we read Careers360, 25 August 2026
CMA Intermediate, June 2026, both groups 19.68% 2,144 cleared both groups ICMAI result as reported by Free Press Journal, 5 August 2026
CMA Final, June 2026, both groups 32.97% 1,430 cleared both groups ICMAI result as reported by Free Press Journal, 5 August 2026

Pass rates cover one sitting and different groups of candidates, so do not rank the bodies by them. A 40% minimum in each paper and 50% overall is the pass rule for CA Foundation (ICAI FAQ).

Honest take

CA Intermediate, with both groups attempted together, passed only 8.47% of 33,304 in May 2026, down from 13.22% a year earlier. That is the middle of the ladder, where many students lose a year or two.

The same ICAI drive had 8,911 vacancies for 5,834 participants. Demand for qualified CAs is real. The hard part is reaching the point where you can use it.

The low-pay clock, worked out for the CA route

CA training is two years under the new scheme (ICAI FAQ). ICAI recommends these monthly minimum stipends for those two years, pending a change to the regulation. A draft was published in the Gazette on 25 June 2026, and comments closed on 5 August 2026.

Where you train Two years of stipend, added up Gap against a graduate's Rs 18,000 a month for 24 months (Rs 4,32,000)
City or town of 20 lakh people or more 12 x Rs 5,000 + 12 x Rs 6,000 = Rs 1,32,000 Rs 4,32,000 - Rs 1,32,000 = Rs 3,00,000
City or town of 5 lakh to under 20 lakh 12 x Rs 4,000 + 12 x Rs 5,000 = Rs 1,08,000 Rs 4,32,000 - Rs 1,08,000 = Rs 3,24,000
Town of under 5 lakh people 12 x Rs 3,000 + 12 x Rs 4,000 = Rs 84,000 Rs 4,32,000 - Rs 84,000 = Rs 3,48,000

The comparison is rough. Rs 18,000 is the median for graduates who are in formal work, which not every graduate is. The industrial-training months carry a separate ICAI minimum of Rs 15,000 a month, so the real gap is smaller in those months. ICAI registration fees for the three levels add up to Rs 49,000 (Rs 9,000, Rs 18,000 and Rs 22,000), before coaching and repeat attempts, for which we found no official figure.

So the low-pay clock for CA runs to roughly Rs 3 lakh or more in lost pay across training, on top of the exam years. For a family with a thin runway, that is a decision to make with open eyes, not a reason to say no.

Fresher versus year three or five: how much pay really grows

Time alone adds less than most people hope.

Financial analyst title
Rs 3.88 lakh to Rs 5.56 lakh

Under one year versus 1 to 4 years (PayScale, July 2026). 5.56 / 3.88 = 1.43 times.

Data analyst title
Rs 4.13 lakh to Rs 5.66 lakh

5.66 / 4.13 = 1.37 times.

Accountant title
Rs 2.29 lakh to Rs 2.91 lakh

2.91 / 2.29 = 1.27 times. The smallest gain on this list.

Digital marketing manager title
Rs 3.09 lakh to Rs 4.79 lakh

4.79 / 3.09 = 1.55 times, on a sample of 77 and 146.

PayScale figures are average total pay by years of experience, self-reported, by job title and not by degree. The PLFS tenure gain for the plain graduate group was also 1.39 times (Rs 18,000 to Rs 25,000). Anything beyond about 1.3 to 1.6 times has to come from a move, such as a specialty, a better employer, a credential or paid work of your own.

The top is further away still. Here is how wide the middle and the top sit within one job title.

What we compared The numbers Working Source
Financial analyst base pay, 10th to 90th percentile Rs 2.67 lakh to Rs 10 lakh 10 / 2.67 = 3.7 times PayScale, 1,058 profiles, July 2026
Accountant base pay, 10th to 90th percentile Rs 1.51 lakh to Rs 6.23 lakh 6.23 / 1.51 = 4.1 times PayScale, 1,195 profiles, June 2026
Digital marketing manager base pay, 10th to 90th percentile Rs 2.71 lakh to Rs 20 lakh 20 / 2.71 = 7.4 times PayScale, 343 profiles, April 2026

Median, strong or exceptional

  • Median: about Rs 2.2 lakh a year at entry for a plain graduate in formal work, rising to about Rs 3 lakh by year three.
  • Strong: the upper half of analyst titles at Rs 5 to 6 lakh by year one to four, and placed CAs at ICAI's Rs 12 to 13 lakh average.
  • Exceptional: the 90th percentile of any title and the highest campus offers. A small share reaches this, usually after a skill, employer or credential advantage.

What lifts a commerce graduate into the top band

The pattern is the same in every row below. One core skill, one multiplier skill that makes the core worth more, and visible proof a stranger can check.

This stack is your high-income skill portfolio. Clear English, written and spoken, is the multiplier almost every row needs. So are the numbers: a commerce graduate who can explain a number simply is rarer than one who can calculate it.

Route Core skill Multiplier skill Proof that counts The jump
Analytics and finance roles Excel to a high level, SQL, and one BI tool. Plain-English reporting and one industry you know, such as retail or lending. A dashboard on a real or public dataset, with a one-page note on what a manager should do next. Moving from reports people ask for to questions you raise, then to paid projects.
Accounts, tax and GST practice Accounting software, GST return work and reconciliation, done accurately. Client communication and a monthly routine a shop owner can follow. A sample GST calendar, a reconciliation checklist and a reference from one small business. Moving from one-off filings to monthly packages for several clients.
CA, CS or CMA The exam subjects and training-year accuracy. Spreadsheets, data fluency and the ability to explain numbers to a non-finance person. Training-year work you can describe without breaching confidentiality, such as a process you improved. Moving from a firm seat to a specialty, a senior industry role or your own practice.
Sales, marketing and business development Finding the right customer and starting the conversation. A basic grip of numbers, such as margin, conversion and cost per lead. A small campaign or outreach test with the replies and the result written down. Moving from hitting a target to owning an account, a channel or a small team.

Learn the tools first from free material such as YouTube courses, official software documentation and the institute's own study material.

Judge any paid course by its syllabus, update date, exercises and what past learners built, not by its platform name. A pile of certificates is not proof. Test the stack with The 3 Gates before you pay for more.

The 3 Gates, applied to a pay jump

Gate 1 Proof of Skill

The finished sheet, return checklist or campaign in the table above.

Gate 2 Proof of Communication

Explain the work out loud, in half a minute to two minutes, to a shopkeeper or relative who knows nothing about finance.

Gate 3 Proof of Value

Show it to three people who would pay for this work. Write down what they would change and what they would pay.

Who pays, and how they find and trust you

Pay depends on who is paying and how they come to trust you. Few commerce students are taught that part. This table gives it in plain words and promises no income.

Route Who pays How they find and trust you First skill worth learning One number to watch
Analytics and finance roles An employer, or a small firm that needs a report or a clean tracker. A dashboard they can open, a referral, one clear specialty on your profile. A one-line position: who you help and with what. Then one fixed offer, such as a monthly sales report for a small shop. Replies to calls for a sample, then paid projects.
Accounts, tax and GST practice A small business owner or a family that wants returns filed on time. Word of mouth from another owner, accurate work, and a calm monthly routine. A written scope with a price per month, and a polite follow-up before every due date. Clients who stay after three months.
CA, CS or CMA practice or advisory Businesses and individuals who need a signature, a filing or a decision. Referrals and a clear niche. The professional bodies limit how members may advertise, so read the current code before you promote. Ask every pleased client for one introduction, and learn to talk about fees before work starts. Introductions received per pleased client.
Sales and business development An employer on a target, or your own customers. A track record of numbers you can show, and references. Write down every lead, the follow-up date and why a deal closed or died. Leads that become a first meeting, then a paid yes.
Bank exam and RBI routes A single employer on a published scale. A rank and an interview. Employer-only. The sales layer matters mainly for a side route, such as tutoring or bookkeeping, or for the move after the post. Not applicable inside the post.

A first small client for an accounts or tax service often goes like this.

  1. Start with the people you already know. A cousin's shop, a neighbour's clinic or a family business is a real first client. Offer one clear job, not everything.
  2. Write the scope in plain words. For example: monthly bills entered, one return filed, one reconciliation, one call. Put the price per month and what is extra.
  3. Take a part payment on new work. A short message confirming scope and price is enough to begin.
  4. Follow up before the due date, not after. Clients remember who reminded them. That habit is the reason they stay.
  5. Raise the price when proof and demand rise. The common mistake is staying at the first price long after the work improved.

Honest take

The most scalable ownership path in commerce is a small-business accounts, tax and analytics service, or selling an analytics skill directly. It scales because you set the price, package repeat monthly work into a fixed offer, keep a client list you own, and can later hire a junior or a freelancer to do the routine parts.

A CA, CS or CMA practice is the same idea with a credential on top. A salary is a tool to save and learn, while owning a client list or a practice is where larger income builds. Much of this work can be done remotely for clients in other cities, which matters if you want to live outside a metro. None of this is guaranteed. It needs proof, follow-up and patience, and you can start it while holding a job. Once you invoice, check current GST and Udyam rules on the official portals.

Competition at more than one stage

Passing one tough filter does not end the contest in commerce. The salary in the headline sits behind the last filter, not the first.

Stage 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5
CA: Foundation, Intermediate, training, Final, then placement or practice

Each exam level is its own filter, as the pass rates above show. Training needs a seat with a firm. After the title, a campus job or a client base is a separate climb. ICAI reports more vacancies than participants in the latest drive, so the last filter is lighter than the first three, but only for those who reach it.

Stage 1, 2 and 3
Bank PO: prelims, mains, interview

Selection is rank-based against a set number of posts. Clearing a stage does not clear the next, and an unsuccessful attempt leaves you with little work proof unless you built some.

Stage 1, 2 and 3
RBI Grade B: Phase I, Phase II, interview

The 2026 notice listed 60 posts across three streams. The economics stream had 10. Few seats and several filters make this a bet to place beside a skill, not instead of one.

Stage 1 and 2
CS and CMA: levels, then training and placement

Both are multi-level ladders with their own pass rates. After qualifying you still need a job or a practice, so the same last-stage question applies.

Bank and RBI posts are an honest choice for people who want a published scale and steady work, and saving and investing can still build wealth on it. Just count the cost of the preparation years, since each one is also a year of pay you did not earn. Plan a second skill that can grow on its own, and check the service rules on outside work.

AI by route: where it eats the entry job and where it adds pay

AI changes the task mix before it changes titles. Use the Survival check of The 4-Checkpoint Protocol (Biology, Context, Market and Survival): is this work still needed when the tools improve?

Route Disruption risk, honestly Leverage, now and later
Bookkeeping, data entry and clerical accounts High. The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 lists accounting, bookkeeping and payroll clerks, bank tellers and data entry clerks among the fastest-declining roles worldwide. Routine entry and matching are what software does first. Now: use software to enter and match faster, and check every output. Later: move up to review, exceptions, advice and client handling, which stay with people.
Audit, tax and GST work Medium. First-pass checking and drafting get faster. Professional judgment, signing responsibility and client trust stay with a named person. Now: draft notices and checklists with AI, then verify. Later: price on advice and review, not on hours of data entry.
Finance and data analytics Medium for routine reports. The same report lists big data specialists and FinTech engineers among the fastest-growing roles, so demand moves toward people who can frame the question. Now: speed up cleaning and charting, and always verify. Later: choose the question and explain the answer to a client.
Sales, marketing and business development Medium. Drafting and list-building get faster. Trust, negotiation and knowing which customer to pursue stay human. Now: use AI for research and first drafts. Later: run more tests per week and keep the human conversation.
Bank and RBI posts Medium for counter work. Selection and the published scale do not depend on tools, but the daily work of tellers and clerks is the kind the report flags as shrinking. Now: learn the digital banking tools in your role. Later: officer-level judgment and credit work carry the value.

If you ask whether a better adjacent route exists, one does for many commerce students. A BCom student who likes numbers but fears a clerical start can aim for analytics in an industry they know. Domain depth plus a tool skill is harder to replace than either alone.

Fees, debt and the pay math

Read every figure above beside the price of reaching it.

Worked example. Take a total education budget of Rs 10 lakh. The 10% line for college is Rs 1 lakh, and the 20% caution line is Rs 2 lakh. ICAI's three registration fees (Rs 49,000) are 4.9% of that budget. The remaining money pays for living costs, a laptop, software, current learning, coaching if you choose it, repeat attempts and the low-pay years above.

College is a small part of career success. Keep about 10% of your family's total education budget for the degree, and ask for course-specific evidence above about 20%. Those are strict planning rules, not laws.

Avoid education debt unless a credential is legally required. Signing a statutory audit is reserved for chartered accountants, so CA is a case where the credential is the product. For most other commerce routes, the skill and the proof are the product.

If a foreign master's or a global credential is in the plan

A big loan for a foreign master's is a high-risk bet, since repayment can hinge on a visa, a job abroad and the rupee rate. Think about it only if the course is truly among the best for finance or accounting and the benefit is checked, using top five as a harsh filter and never as a guarantee.

Set it against a low-debt route at home. A scholarship you only hope for is not funding, and renewal terms matter. Before you compare pay across countries, take off tax, rent and loan instalments. Entry rules for ACCA, CFA and US CPA are in our guide to professional courses for commerce students.

Mistakes with commerce pay numbers

1
Quoting the CA average as a commerce outcome

It describes placed CAs. A student who stops at Intermediate is not in that number.

2
Counting only the exam years

Add the training years and the stipend gap, then ask what share of starters reach the payoff.

Reading a manager-title figure as a fresher offer

The Rs 20 lakh 90th percentile for digital marketing managers belongs to the title at its best, not to year one.

Stopping at the degree

The plain graduate bucket in formal work earns Rs 18,000 a month at entry. A skill, a practice or a credential is what changes that.

What to do next

First, pick two routes from the table and write the label on each. Next, fill in the three clocks on paper for each, using the numbers above. Then start one finished piece of proof, such as a dashboard or a sample GST calendar, and show it to three people who might pay for that work. Some people finish this in a few weeks and others need a couple of months, and both are normal.

Choosing the route well and building a high-income skill portfolio beside it, with one core skill, one multiplier and proof anyone can check, is the decision that can lift a commerce graduate above the median and toward earlier financial freedom.

FAQs on commerce career options with salary

What do commerce career options with salary look like for a fresher in India?
Very different by route. A typical BA, BSc, BCom or BBA graduate in formal work earns a median of Rs 18,000 a month at entry (PLFS 2025). Analyst titles show Rs 3.9 to 4.1 lakh average total pay in the first year on PayScale. ICAI says placed newly qualified CAs average about Rs 12 to 13 lakh. Each number counts a different group.
Which commerce career has the highest salary?
At the top end, CA, finance and data roles, and digital marketing leadership show the widest spread, with 90th percentile base pay near Rs 10 lakh and Rs 20 lakh in two PayScale samples, and ICAI citing domestic offers above Rs 32 lakh. These are top outcomes after a long climb, not what a new graduate is offered.
What are the career options after 12th commerce with high salary?
Routes with the most headroom are analytics and finance roles, digital marketing, an accounts and tax practice, and CA, CS or CMA with a practice later. They pay more when you add a skill and proof of work. Bank and RBI routes pay on a published scale, so the top is known in advance.
Does a newly qualified CA really earn Rs 12 to 13 lakh?
ICAI says so for newly qualified CAs placed in industry, in a letter dated 27 April 2026. It counts those placed through campus drives, not everyone who starts the course. ICAI's own pages also differ on the highest offer, Rs 32.33 lakh on its placement page and above Rs 36 lakh in the letter.
How much do CA articled assistants earn?
Very little. ICAI's FAQ lists a recommended Rs 3,000 to Rs 6,000 a month for the two-year training under the new scheme, pending a change to the regulation, with a draft published in the Gazette on 25 June 2026. Industrial training carries a minimum of Rs 15,000 a month. Check the current rule before you plan.
Is BBA better than BCom for salary?
We found no sampled entry-pay figure that separates them. PayScale averages (Rs 5.60 lakh for BBA, Rs 5.53 lakh for BCom) are dominated by experienced people. The degree matters less than the skill you add, whether that is sales, analytics or accounts. BCom has one clear edge: CA direct entry needs at least 55% in a commerce degree.
CA, CS or CMA: which pays more?
We cannot rank them on verified like-for-like pay. Only ICAI publishes a placement average, and it counts placed candidates only. Choose by the work: audit and tax for CA, compliance for CS, costing and finance leadership for CMA. Then check the pass rates and the training years in this guide.
Which commerce routes have a capped salary ladder?
Bank PO and clerk posts and RBI Grade B pay on a published scale, so the ceiling is known in advance. A general degree with no added skill also sits on a flat band. A side route can add income where service rules allow it.
Can I earn from commerce skills while studying?
Yes, where work is small and visible, such as bookkeeping, GST filing support, a report for a shop, or a simple campaign. Start with one clear job and one pleased client. Never count on a fixed income. Treat the first paid project as proof, not as a salary.
Does an economics degree pay more than BCom?
We found no reliable survey of economics entry pay, so we make no claim. Economics opens research, policy and data roles and the RBI Grade B DEPR stream, which had 10 posts in 2026. Statistics and coding skill will move pay more than the degree name.
Will AI cut commerce salaries?
It is cutting clerical entry first. The World Economic Forum lists accounting, bookkeeping and payroll clerks and bank tellers among the fastest-declining roles worldwide. Advice, review, analysis and client work are safer and can be sped up with AI. Learn to use AI and to check its output.
Is it worth borrowing for a commerce degree or course?
Usually not. As a strict planning rule, keep college to about 10% of your total education budget and treat 20% as a caution line. Avoid education debt unless a credential is legally required. ICAI registration fees across three levels add up to Rs 49,000, so the larger costs are coaching and repeat attempts.
How reliable are the pay figures in this guide?
Every figure is an indicative range or average, tied to a named source and date, and none is exact or guaranteed. Where no sample existed, the page says so instead of printing a number. Look at live job listings and talk to people in the role before you decide.
