The career options after 12th PCM are not a list of jobs. They are a ladder of nine rungs, and your JEE rank decides which rung you start on.
JoSAA, the joint counselling for IITs, NITs, IIITs and other government-funded colleges, had 67,323 seats in 2026. About 15.4 lakh students sat JEE Main, roughly 23 for every seat. Yet those seats are only about 5.4% of all B.Tech admissions.
The rung matters less than the skill portfolio you build on it. That portfolio unlocks higher-paying work and earlier financial freedom.
The short version
- 71.9% of JoSAA seats (48,372) need only a JEE Main rank. The 18,951 IIT seats need Advanced, where 56,880 qualified, or 3.0 for each seat.
- Rank buys a branch or a college, rarely both. IIT Bombay computer science closed at 67 in 2026. IIT Bhilai closed at 8,886.
- About 95% of B.Tech students are outside JoSAA, so a missed rank is a change of route, not the end of engineering.
- Check each college's NIRF sheet, then build one proof project. A skill portfolio you can show beats the rung name when you apply for your first job or a better one.

The order follows the tightest closing ranks first. It is not an order of pay. Pay depends on proof, as the NIRF numbers below show.
Showing all 9 rungs.
| Rung | Which rank list | What it took | Seats and crowd | Money and outcome | Watch out |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rung 1. Computer science at the oldest IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, Kharagpur) | JEE Advanced rank | JoSAA 2026, round 5 (the final round), open gender-neutral: Bombay 67, Delhi 128, Madras 151, Kanpur 283, Kharagpur 509. | Branch-wise seat counts were not collected. All IIT seats together: 18,951. 56,880 students qualified for Advanced. | NIRF 2025 median pay of the placed: IIT Madras Rs 17.5 lakh, IIT Delhi Rs 19.08 lakh. | About one in five IIT Delhi graduates was neither placed nor in higher studies (NIRF 2025). |
| Rung 2. Computer science at Roorkee, Hyderabad, Guwahati, BHU and Indore | JEE Advanced rank | Same round: Roorkee 587, Hyderabad 680, Guwahati 822, BHU 1,439, Indore 1,676. | Same 18,951 IIT seats, with closing ranks about 9 to 25 times looser than Bombay. | We did not read the NIRF sheets for these five. Open each one before you compare. | A rank of about 1,500 reaches BHU or Indore computer science, not Delhi. |
| Rung 3. Core branches (Mechanical, Civil, Electrical) at the old IITs | JEE Advanced rank | JoSAA 2025, final round: Mechanical closed at 1,766 (Bombay), 2,354 (Madras), 3,599 (Kharagpur). Civil at 4,095 (Bombay) and 5,629 (Madras). Electrical at 418 (Bombay) and 741 (Madras). 2026 core-branch ranks were not collected, so these are last year. | Same IIT seat pool. | Branch-wise pay is not in the NIRF sheets we read. Do not trust a branch pay table that names no sample. | A top-college core branch and a newer-college computer science seat are a real trade. See the next section. |
| Rung 4. Computer science at the newer IITs (Ropar to Bhilai) | JEE Advanced rank | Round 5, 2026: Ropar 3,214, Mandi 3,762, Dhanbad 4,167, Bhubaneswar 4,899, Tirupati 6,030, Goa 7,024, Jammu 7,218, Palakkad 7,625, Dharwad 8,332, Bhilai 8,886. | Same IIT seat pool. Bhilai closed at a rank 133 times larger than Bombay. | No NIRF sheet read for these. Check the placed share and the "neither" count yourself. | Small, young campuses can have uneven placements. Read the last two batches, not the brochure. |
| Rung 5. NIT computer science and core branches | JEE Main rank | JoSAA 2026, round 5, other-state open: Trichy CSE 1,373, Warangal CSE 2,581. Surathkal CSE in 2025: 1,827 other-state, 2,800 home-state. | 25,162 NIT seats in 2026. No Advanced needed. | NIRF 2025 median of the placed: NIT Trichy Rs 14.35 lakh, NIT Jamshedpur Rs 10.8 lakh, NIT Patna Rs 7.0 lakh. NIT Andhra Pradesh Rs 6.41 lakh in the 2025 batch. | At Surathkal in 2025 the home-state close was nearly 1,000 ranks looser than other-state. Check which quota you hold. |
| Rung 6. IIIT and other government-funded technical institute (GFTI) seats through JoSAA | JEE Main rank | We did not collect closing ranks for these. Read your own category table on the JoSAA site. | 11,518 IIIT seats and 11,692 GFTI seats, so 23,210 together. | Check each institute, since some are strong and some are thin. | Do not rank a seat by the word "IIIT" or "NIT" in its name. Rank it by its own placed share and median. |
| Rung 7. BITS Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad through BITSAT | BITSAT score out of 390 (not a JEE rank) | Final cut-offs, 2026: computer science 308 (Pilani), 274 (Goa), 272 (Hyderabad). Mechanical 239, 233 and 228. | Not counted here. | NIRF 2025: BITS Pilani placed 89.1% with a median of Rs 18 lakh. Fees were not verified here. | BITS runs its own test. Preparing for JEE does not replace a BITSAT plan. |
| Rung 8. State counselling, for example AP EAPCET | State rank (EAPCET) | AP, 2025, as reported for Andhra University College of Engineering: computer science closed at 1,043 in round 1 and 2,937 in round 3. Mechanical 11,866 and Civil 10,136 in round 3. | AP counselling 2026 offered 1,50,828 engineering seats in 247 colleges, 2.2 times all JoSAA seats. | AP government order sets all-in annual fees from Rs 40,000 to Rs 1,05,000. | The same college can close at a rank nearly three times larger by round 3. Do not read round 1 as the whole story. |
| Rung 9. Not engineering at all | Varies by door | B.Arch, a licensed profession, needs Physics and Maths, and the NATA 2026 brochure asks for at least 45% aggregate. IISER IAT 2026 had 2,343 seats. | CUET (the common university entrance test) Maths 2026: 4,01,527 students sat the paper. | Dates, seats and age caps for 14 such doors sit in our separate guide. | Some doors, such as the NDA, have birth-date windows that no rank can reopen. |

Read the table as a menu with prices, not a ranking of worth. A Rung 8 seat with a strong project can beat a Rung 5 seat with none.
The seat arithmetic behind every rank
A closing rank means little without the crowd and the seat count. Here is the working, using only figures we could source.
| What we measured | Numbers | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| JEE Main 2026 crowd per JoSAA seat | 15,38,468 unique candidates appeared; 67,323 seats | 15,38,468 / 67,323 | About 22.9 test-takers per seat |
| JEE Main to JEE Advanced | 1,79,694 appeared in Advanced | 1,79,694 / 15,38,468 | About 11.7%, roughly 1 in 8.6 of the Main crowd |
| JEE Advanced per IIT seat, appeared | 1,79,694 appeared; 18,951 IIT seats | 1,79,694 / 18,951 | About 9.5 per seat |
| JEE Advanced per IIT seat, qualified | 56,880 qualified; 18,951 seats | 56,880 / 18,951 | About 3.0 qualifiers per seat |
| Seats that need only a JEE Main rank | NIT 25,162 + IIIT 11,518 + GFTI 11,692 | 48,372 / 67,323 | 71.9% of all JoSAA seats |
| JoSAA share of all B.Tech students | 67,323 JoSAA seats; 12.53 lakh B.Tech admissions in 2024-25 | 67,323 / 12,53,000 | About 5.4%, so about 95% study elsewhere |
| One state against all of JoSAA | 1,50,828 AP seats; 67,323 JoSAA seats | 1,50,828 / 67,323 | AP alone offered about 2.2 times as many seats |
Read these with care
- 15,38,468 includes students who never plan to use JoSAA, so 22.9 per seat is an upper bound on the real queue.
- The B.Tech admission count is from 2024-25 and the JoSAA seat count is from 2026. The years differ, so 5.4% is a scale check, not an exact share.
- The JoSAA seat counts come from a report of the seat matrix. Reports differ slightly on the IIT count, so treat 18,951 as "about 18,900".
Branch or college? The same rank buys one, not both
Every year students ask whether to take a top college with a weak branch or a strong branch in a thinner college. The ranks show why it is hard.
A closing rank is a moving number
NIT Trichy computer science closed at 1,449 in 2025 and 1,373 in 2026, about 5% tighter. NIT Warangal went from 2,409 to 2,581, about 7% looser. NIT Surathkal home-state closed at 3,406 in 2023, 2,933 in 2024 and 2,800 in 2025.
Watch out: Plan with a band, not a single rank. Two years of data move in both directions.
The first round is not the last round
In AP counselling for 2025, Andhra University College of Engineering computer science closed at 1,043 in round 1 and 2,937 in round 3. That is 2.8 times looser inside one counselling.
Watch out: Fill the choice list for every round. Do not quit after round 1.
One college, very different ranks
At IIT Bombay in 2025, computer science closed at 66 and civil at 4,095, about 62 times apart. At IIT Madras the gap was 171 against 5,629.
Watch out: The branch can matter more than the college name. Decide which one you are buying.
Advanced ranks and Main ranks are different lists
IIT seats use the JEE Advanced rank. NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats use the JEE Main rank. A number like 2,500 means something very different on each list.
Watch out: Never compare an IIT closing rank to an NIT closing rank as if they were one scale.
Honest take
If you must pick, choose the combination where you will do the work for four years. The closing rank shows how many students want a seat. It does not show how much the work will pay you.
Computer science at a newer campus can be a fine start for a student who builds projects. It can be a poor one for a student who waits for a campus drive.
What "placed" hides: NIRF numbers for nine colleges
NIRF is the government's college-ranking framework. Its sheets are filled by the colleges themselves, but they show three things a brochure often hides. These are the share placed, the share in higher studies, and the rest.
| College | Graduated | Placed | Higher studies | Neither | Median of the placed | At most, share of the batch at or above that median |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IIT Madras | 714 | 76.9% | 21.4% | 1.7% | Rs 17.5 lakh | about 38% |
| IIT Delhi | 946 | 75.2% | 5.2% | 19.7% | Rs 19.08 lakh | about 38% |
| BITS Pilani | 2,759 | 89.1% | 10.3% | 0.7% | Rs 18 lakh | about 45% |
| NIT Trichy | 1,029 | 76.9% | 15.4% | 7.8% | Rs 14.35 lakh | about 38% |
| NIT Jamshedpur | 740 | 94.7% | 5.3% | 0% | Rs 10.8 lakh | about 47% |
| Banasthali Vidyapith | 804 | 86.1% | 6.7% | 7.2% | Rs 9.5 lakh | about 43% |
| NIT Patna | 738 | 80.1% | 6.9% | 13.0% | Rs 7.0 lakh | about 40% |
| NIT Andhra Pradesh (2025 batch) | 641 | 61.6% | not read | not read | Rs 6.41 lakh | about 31% |
| Sathyabama (NIRF engineering rank 67) | 2,801 | 53.6% | 7.2% | 39.2% | Rs 6.0 lakh | about 27% |
The median covers only placed students. Half of the placed earned that figure or more, so at most half of the placed share of the batch did. We halve the placed share for the last column. NIRF 2025 sheets (graduating year 2023-24) for the first seven and the last college; NIT Andhra Pradesh is the 2025 batch from the NIRF 2026 report as quoted by Careers360, covering all undergraduates. "Neither" can include founders and exam aspirants.
Two trends to notice
- NIT Patna's median went from Rs 9.88 lakh in 2022-23 to Rs 7.0 lakh in 2023-24, down 29%.
- NIT Andhra Pradesh went from Rs 7.56 lakh in the NIRF 2025 sheet to Rs 6.41 lakh in the NIRF 2026 report, down 15%. These two releases are not strictly like for like.
- A government-funded name did not protect either median.
Fees, first pay and the 10% rule
A degree should not eat the whole education budget. As a strict planning rule, treat about 10% of your family's total education budget as the starting limit for college fees. Treat 20% as a serious caution line.
Here are four real fee levels from AP, set against one sampled entry salary. The salary is the PayScale India entry figure for a software engineer, Rs 5.37 lakh, from 4,950 profiles in July 2026. It is not a promise of a job.
| Route | Four-year fees | Months of that entry pay | Budget needed to stay at 10% |
|---|---|---|---|
| AP government order, lowest all-in annual fee | Rs 40,000 x 4 = Rs 1.6 lakh | 1.6 / 5.37 x 12 = 3.6 months | Rs 16 lakh total budget at 10% |
| AP government order, highest all-in annual fee | Rs 1,05,000 x 4 = Rs 4.2 lakh | 4.2 / 5.37 x 12 = 9.4 months | Rs 42 lakh at 10% |
| A private AP college, lower category (one college page, 2026-27) | Rs 47,000 x 4 = Rs 1.88 lakh | 1.88 / 5.37 x 12 = 4.2 months | Rs 18.8 lakh at 10% |
| The same college, higher category | Rs 1,29,000 x 4 = Rs 5.16 lakh | 5.16 / 5.37 x 12 = 11.5 months | Rs 51.6 lakh at 10%; Rs 25.8 lakh at the 20% caution line |
Fees are tuition and listed charges only. Hostel, travel, a laptop and exam fees are extra. The AP range comes from the state higher-education regulator's order for 2023-24 to 2025-26, read from a mirrored copy of the order. Check the order for 2026-27 before you budget. The private college figures come from one college page.
These numbers say that the fee itself is rarely the big risk at low-fee colleges. The big risk is the "neither" share, because a fee paid with no job to follow is the real loss. A 39.2% "neither" rate at one college is a bigger warning than a Rs 1 lakh fee gap.
The other 90% of your budget pays for living costs, a laptop, entrance fees, current online learning, projects and the upskilling you will need after the degree.
The NPTEL exam costs Rs 1,000, and many free YouTube and open-course materials teach the same code. An engineering degree is still needed for most engineering jobs. It is not a full skill system.
Popular PCM claims vs the record
Several pages that rank for this topic repeat the same weak claims. Here they are next to the figures.
| What you will read | What the record shows |
|---|---|
| "JoSAA is how you get into engineering." | JoSAA offered 67,323 seats in 2026. AICTE counted about 12.53 lakh B.Tech admissions in 2024-25. JoSAA is about 5.4% of that. |
| "You need JEE Advanced for a good engineering seat." | 48,372 of 67,323 JoSAA seats (71.9%) need only a JEE Main rank. IIT seats are 18,951. |
| "B.Arch needs 50% in Class 12 PCM." | The NATA 2026 brochure from the Council of Architecture asks for at least 45% aggregate, with Physics and Maths compulsory. |
| "India produces over 1.5 million engineers every year." | One ranking page says this with no source. AICTE approved about 14.9 lakh seats and counted about 12.53 lakh admissions in 2024-25. The 15 lakh looks like seats, not graduates. |
| "Cybersecurity analyst: Rs 8.3 to 35.9 lakh." | A 4.3 times spread with no sample size or year. We print no pay range that names no sample. |
| A headline "placement percentage" on a college page. | NIRF sheets show the share placed, the share in higher studies and the rest. At Sathyabama 39.2% were neither, and at IIT Delhi 19.7%. |
A number is only useful with its source and its year. Before you act on any pay claim, ask who counted it, how many people they counted and when.
Where the 12.5 lakh B.Tech students actually sit
AICTE counted about 12.53 lakh B.Tech admissions in 2024-25 against 14.9 lakh approved seats, a fill rate of about 84%. Five branches took almost nine in ten of them.
| Branch group | Admitted, 2024-25 | Share of 12.53 lakh |
|---|---|---|
| Computer science and allied (AI, data science, cyber, robotics) | 3,90,245 | 31.1% |
| Mechanical | 2,36,909 | 18.9% |
| Civil | 1,72,936 | 13.8% |
| Electronics and communication | 1,60,450 | 12.8% |
| Electrical | 1,25,902 | 10.0% |
| Everything else | 1,66,558 | 13.3% |
From AICTE data as reported by a news site. The last row is the difference. The five named groups add to 10,86,442, which is 86.7% of the total. AICTE projected 15.98 lakh capacity for 2025-26.
Computer science alone is almost one in three seats filled. A computer science degree puts you in the biggest crowd on the market.
What separates you is the work you can show. That is why a salary range with no sample does not help you decide.
Use The 4-Checkpoint Protocol before you pick a rung
Before you commit, check your Biology, Context, Market and Survival. This is The 4-Checkpoint Protocol.
Can you sit with maths and code for most of a day, for four years? Or do you come alive on a workshop floor, a drawing board or a site? Pick the daily rhythm you can repeat.
What can your family fund, in fees and in years? A Rs 1.6 lakh route and a Rs 5.16 lakh route are different bets. So is a drop year.
Will someone pay for what you can do? Computer science has the biggest crowd, 31% of admissions. Core branches have fewer seats and fewer people chasing the same jobs. Neither guarantees pay.
Which part of the work gets easier for AI and which part still needs your judgment? Routine code and drawings are shrinking tasks. Debugging live systems, design choices and site decisions are not.
If the rank comes in lower than the plan
This is the moment that decides the year. There are two honest moves, and each has a cost you can count.
- Delays first pay by a year. An entry software salary is about Rs 5.37 lakh in the PayScale sample, so count that.
- Coaching adds a cost we could not source, so ask for the fee sheet.
- Makes sense when the gain moves you at least two rungs and the family can fund it.
- Needs a proof project running in the same year.
- Starts proof-building this year, not next year.
- Choose by NIRF sheet and fee, not by name.
- Keep later counselling rounds alive, since a round 3 close can be about 2.8 times looser than round 1.
- Keep BITSAT, state tests and non-engineering doors in the plan.
Honest take
A drop year is a big bet when about 22.9 students compete for each JoSAA seat. A repeat attempt puts you in next year's crowd.
Keep a second door open that costs little, such as a CUET form for a BSc or a state counselling slot. If engineering is no longer the plan, the guide on career options after 12th except engineering has the dates, seats and age caps.
A BSc in statistics, physics or data science, with a strong programming portfolio, can be a better bet than a B.Tech seat at a college with a high "neither" share. Check that college's NIRF sheet before you decide.
Five filters, not one
The ladder has more than one filter. A student can clear one and still face the next. This is the real shape of an engineering path.
JEE Main
About 15.4 lakh students appeared once or twice. It sets the NIT, IIIT and GFTI list.
Clears it: about the top 2.5 lakh move on to Advanced.
Watch out: it is the same crowd in both sessions, since 8,00,516 sat both.
JEE Advanced
1,79,694 appeared. 56,880 qualified, which is 31.7%. That is 3.0 qualifiers per IIT seat.
Clears it: students who qualify and then rank high enough for a branch they want.
Watch out: qualifying is not a seat. It is a ticket to the next queue.
JoSAA rounds
Five rounds in 2026, ending 16 July. Your rank, category, quota and choice list decide the seat.
Clears it: a smart choice list filled in order of real preference.
Watch out: an order of choices written in panic cannot be undone.
Placement
Every NIRF sheet above shows a share that is neither placed nor in higher studies. At Sathyabama it was 39.2%.
Clears it: students with visible proof when the campus drive is thin.
Watch out: the college name does not sit the interview for you.
The next exam, if you want one
GATE 2026 for electronics: 17,392 qualified out of 95,752 who appeared, about 18.2%. ESE 2027 advertised 480 posts across four streams.
Clears it: students who build a plan for it from year one.
Watch out: do not count a government post as a certain backup.
Honest take
The path with the most headroom is not a rung. It is ownership.
A developer who ships products, freelances for clients or builds a small software business owns the price of the work and can hire help. A salary alone rarely reaches early financial freedom.
That ownership path needs proof, sales sense and clear writing. No rank gives you those. Add one as you go.
The proof shelf and the multiplier skill for each rung
Employers and clients trust finished work more than a college name. Pick one proof shelf and build it deeply, instead of five half-built profiles.
| Where you land | Proof that counts | Multiplier skill | Where AI helps now, and what comes later |
|---|---|---|---|
| Computer science, top rungs (IIT, NIT, BITS) | A public repository with real commits, one deployed project, and a short write-up of a bug you fixed. | Clear writing and talking to a non-engineer about a problem. | Now: AI helps draft code and tests, which you must read and run. Later: routine code shrinks, so system design and debugging carry the pay. |
| Computer science, other rungs (state and private) | Two shipped projects, one internship or freelance task with a result, and a one-page case note. | One adjacent domain, such as finance, health or logistics. | Now: build faster with AI help and show how you checked it. Later: entry-level production roles are the crowded part, so a domain edge matters. |
| Core branches (Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Electronics) | A drawing set, a model or a site report, plus one software skill such as CAD, simulation or data in a spreadsheet. | Basic programming and cost estimates. | Now: AI speeds first-pass analysis and documents. Later: routine drafting shrinks, so site judgment and safety calls stay valuable. |
| Not engineering (science, design, defence, architecture) | A portfolio, a data project, a fitness log or a medical, matched to the door. | Explaining your work in plain words, in two languages if you can. | Now: research and drafting help. Later: judgment, taste and accountable decisions hold their value. See the separate guide for each door. |
Start with strong free material. YouTube courses, NPTEL, open courseware and official documentation can teach most of the code you will use.
A paid course needs to give you something more, such as expert feedback, accountability or a credential a target employer asks for. Judge each course on its syllabus, recent updates and learner outcomes, not its platform name.
Explain your work clearly in English and in your home language. That one skill raises the value of every proof asset above. Practise it on one person outside engineering each month.
One core skill, one multiplier skill and one visible proof asset is the start of a high-income skill portfolio. It is also what opens higher-paying options, whichever rung you start on.
The calendar and your next 110 days
The 2026 cycle ran from January to a final JoSAA allotment on 16 July. The next one starts earlier than most students plan for.
| Date | Event | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| January 2026 | JEE Main Session 1 | About 13 lakh appeared in this session alone. |
| 2 to 9 April 2026 | JEE Main Session 2 | Session 2 appearers were 10,34,330, and 8,00,516 sat both. |
| 1 June 2026 | JEE Advanced result | 56,880 qualified out of 1,79,694. |
| 1 July 2026 | AP EAPCET result | AP counselling followed, with phase 1 allotment on 9 August. |
| 16 July 2026 | JoSAA round 5 allotment | The final round, about 6.5 months after Session 1. |
| 22 to 24 and 28 to 30 January 2027 | JEE Main 2027 Session 1 (tentative) | NTA calls these dates tentative. Check the notice. 31 January is a buffer day. |
From 4 October 2026 to 22 January 2027 is 110 days, the stretch before the tentative Session 1.
In a Class 12 year, school and boards come first. Use weekday evenings for short practice blocks and one longer weekend block for a single project or paper.
If you are in a drop year, add a fixed weekly proof task next to the mock tests. Treat the dates above as the shape of the year and re-check each on the official notice.
- Check your list. Put your Main and Advanced ranks, or your state rank, against the table. Find your rung and the one above and below it.
- Pick two rungs and one backup. One that fits your work style, one that fits your family budget, and one that costs little to keep alive.
- Run one small test on each. Code a small tool, finish one drawing set or solve one real problem. Give it as long as it honestly takes.
- Write the decision down. One page: what you chose, what it costs, what you gave up and the date you will review it.
Pass The 3 Gates before you commit a year
A good choice is one you can prove, explain and test. These are The 3 Gates: Proof of Skill, Proof of Communication and Proof of Value.
Pass these before you spend a year on any rung
One finished piece of work for your rung: a deployed project, a drawing set, a model, a data analysis or a mock test log that shows steady progress.
Explain that work in 30 seconds to two minutes to someone outside your field, in the language your family speaks at home.
Show it to three people who work in that field and write down what they would change.
Talking to your parents about rank, branch and a drop year
Parents worry about the unknown. Give them seats, fees and a review date.

Expensive wrong turns on this ladder
JoSAA is about 5.4% of B.Tech admissions. If your rank misses it, you have not missed engineering.
Computer science at a thin campus and a core branch at a strong one are different bets. Check the placed share before the branch.
AP computer science closed at 1,043 in round 1 and 2,937 in round 3 in one college. Keep the later rounds alive.
A median covers only the placed students. A 39.2% "neither" share changes the whole picture.
The first pay you delay is a real cost. Count it next to coaching fees.
They run on their own dates and need their own plan. Do not assume a JEE rank carries over.
What to do next
Tonight: find your rung in the table and write down the rung above and below it. This week: open the NIRF sheet for your top two colleges and read the "neither" column. This month: start one proof project and keep it public.
The right rung plus visible proof is how a PCM student builds a high-value skill portfolio, reaches stronger income options and moves toward earlier financial freedom.
